Sequential degree

A student who holds an MA, MBA, MS, or an equivalent graduate degree from Webster University or from another regionally accredited college or university (or its international equivalent) may earn a sequential Master of Arts degree in another area of concentration from Webster University.

Students who hold a Master's degree (or the equivalent from an accredited institution) in a business related discipline may qualify for sequential status. This means that the student's program does not have to include the elective courses.

The high-growth programs at Webster University, especially in the business school, have recognized the modern master's is really a discrete set of skills. Once the core is defined, that is all that has to be mastered. A previous graduate degree tells us the student has already invested in a core and the relevant electives that enhance the degree. In another words, the student has already had a total graduate experience and they can complete a “sequential”degree, which may be much shorter in duration than the regular degree.

In the sequential degree, no relevant electives are required unless they are serving as core course substitutions for duplicated work. Most of our business programs and a few other programs have adopted this pragmatic approach. Please contact our admissions team for further information.

The sequential MA degree program in international business, finance or management requires the completion of 24 credit-hours (equivalent to 8 courses). A sequential MBA requires the completion of 27 credit-hours (excluding any required pre-MBA classes). Please see the section at the end of this page if you wish to qualify for a pre-MBA course waiver based on sequential status.

Pre-MBA Course Waivers

Each student brings to the MBA program a different academic background, career and personal goals. This has implications on the structure of each individual student's program. Depending upon a student's academic background and interests the MBA can consist of 9 to 15 courses. Students without an academic background in business will have to take one to three prerequisite courses. A student who plans to pursue an MBA with an emphasis in a particular area will have a program consisting of 16 to 19 courses.

To apply for a waiver of MBA courses for any of the reasons listed above, please download and fill out the form below and send it to the Admissions office along with your application.
