Webster Basketball Teams Head to Louisville

The Webster University men's and women's basketball teams are headed to Louisville, KY, this weekend to participate in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Tournaments. 

ST. LOUIS, February 26, 2014 - The Webster University men's and women's basketball teams are headed to Louisville, KY, this weekend to participate in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Tournaments.  The top four finishers in the regular season advance, with the winning team in each tourney gaining a spot in the NCAA III National Tournament.

The men's team finished 15-3 in the SLIAC and will face MacMurray College, who finished 15-3 also, in a semi-final contest at 6:00 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, February 27.  Host Spalding University, who finished first at 16-2, will face #4 seed Westminster College (11-7) immediately following.

The Gorlok men and the Highlanders split during the regular season, with Webster losing 67-62 at MacMurray, while winning 90-85 at home.  The Gorlok men have made the most SLIAC Tournament appearances in conference history, with this being their 17th.  If the men advance to the championship, it will take place on Saturday, March 1 at a time TBD. 

The Webster men are led by Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS), who is second in the SLIAC with a 16.5 points per game average, and center Kevin Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS).  Miller is seventh at 14.4 points and second at 8.2 rebounds per game.  Senior guard Hollis Edwards (Nashville, TN/McGavock HS) leads the SLIAC in assists (90) and steals (71).

The Webster women finished at 13-5 and tied for third place with Eureka College, who also finished at 13-5.  Iowa Wesleyan College, who finished 17-1 in its first season in the SLIAC, is not eligible for post-conference play, leaving second place Spalding University (14-4) as the #1 seed.   This is the 16th SLIAC Tournament appearance for the Webster women's squad.

The Gorloks and Red Devils will face off in a semi-final on Friday, February 28 at 6:00 p.m. (EDT) and Spalding will face #4 seed Westminster College (11-7) immediately following.  Webster split with Eureka  during the regular season, losing at Eureka, 70-67, on December 14 and nipping the Red Devils, 64-62, on February 22 at Grant Gymnasium.

The Webster women are led by senior forward Courtney Pursley (Lonedell, MO/St. Clair HS) and senior guard Kaliann Rikard (Cuba, MO/Cuba HS).  Pursley is sixth in the SLIAC in points per game (15.1) and fifth in rebounds (9.6).  Rikard leads the SLIAC with 115 assists and is second in steals (70), while averaging 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

If the women advance to the championship, it will also take place on Saturday, March 1 at a time TBD.
