#2 Gorloks Go 20-0 in SLIAC

ST. LOUIS (APRIL 24, 2014) - The #2 ranked Webster University baseball team took a doubleheader from Westminster College, 6-0 and 3-2, on April 23 at GCS Ballpark.  The Gorloks are 20-0 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, 28-4 overall, and have won six straight.

The Gorloks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one as Joe Winckel (SR, Bonne Terre, MO/North County HS) homered in the first inning, following a Corey Lasky (SR, Vernon Hills, IL/Adlai E Stevenson) walk and Taylor Stoulp (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Mary's HS).  Winckel's third home run gave him a team-high 32 RBIs.

Three pitchers combined for the shutout.  Zach Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township) started the game but left after 2 2/3 innings.  Brett Buchanan (SR, Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook HS) relieved and finished up the third.

Trey Tigart (FR, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) relieved Buchanan in the fourth and pitched three innings, picking up his first collegiate win.  He allowed four hits, no runs, and struck out two.  Jason Gray (SR, St. Louis, MO/Eureka HS) threw a scoreless 1-2-3 ninth.

Winckel was 1-3, with a home run and three RBIs.  Charlie Gandolfi (JR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) was 2-3, with two runs and a stolen base.

In game two, the Gorloks took a 1-0 lead in the second when Ian Foege (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) singled in Jeff Kammer (JR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS).  The Blue Jays tied it up in the top of the third and the score remained  1-1 till the bottom of the eighth.

Jack Bensinger (JR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall) got his second start of the season and threw seven shutout innings.  He allowed six hits and one run, while striking out nine.  Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) pitched a scoreless eighth for Webster.

In the Gorlok eighth, freshman Matt Wollnik (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Lasky.  After a walk to Ryan Hall (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Eureka HS), Winckel singled with two-out to score Wollnik, giving Webster a 2-1 lead.  Kammer brought home an insurance run Hall scored on a fielder's choice run down on a ground ball to third.

Smith came back out to pitch the ninth and, after a walk and a single pulled the Blue Jays within one at 3-2, struck out the final batter for the win.  Smith picked up his seventh victory of the season and is 7-0.

Winckel was 2-4, with a double and an RBI and Foege was 2-3, with an RBI.  Kammer was 1-3, with an RBI, run scored, stolen base, and reached on a HBP.

Webster travels to Eureka, IL, for a three-game series on April 26-27 vs. Eureka College.  Webster returns to GCS Ballpark for a single game vs. Washington University on April 28.
