Webster University and Muny Launch Summer Program for Emerging Artists

Program starts in summer 2015

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 15, 2015) - The Muny, America's premier summer musical theatre, and Webster University’s Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts Conservatory of Theatre Arts, a national leader in training for Musical Theatre, have joined forces to launch a summer intensive for emerging young artists. This three-week program invites 10 rising junior and senior high school students from across the nation to participate in an immersive theatrical experience. The first Muny/Webster Intensive for Emerging Young Artists will be held during the summer of 2015.

“This is a significant step forward in our partnership with Webster’s Conservatory,” said Muny Artistic Director and Executive Producer Mike Isaacson. “This program will be unlike anything else in the country. The Muny has always played a critical role in developing musical theatre talent and this will further that great tradition.”

Peter Sargent, Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Webster said, “The unique blend of the practices of rehearsing for a production of a significant musical with active studio experiences with master teachers will provide an exceptional opportunity for those selected for this amazing program.”

During the first portion of the intensive, participants concentrate on the professional life of a performer. Alongside the Equity company and the Muny Teens, they rehearse and perform in one production for the Muny’s 2015 summer season. They take master classes from visiting Broadway directors, choreographers and performers in residence at The Muny. During the second half of the intensive, participants receive pre-collegiate training from the Webster University faculty while performing each night for audiences of more than 10,000. Classes include acting, voice, movement and dance. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit.

Attendees will be selected through an online video audition. They will be chaperoned by a full time staff and housed on the Webster University campus. The full summer schedule, submission details & pricing will be announced October 27, 2014 on www.muny.org

“By creating this one of a kind summer intensive we are able to provide talented high school students the professional opportunities both The Muny and Webster have to offer,” said Dennis Reagan, Muny President and CEO.

The Muny produces and presents seven exceptional Broadway-style musicals each summer in St. Louis’ historic Forest Park. Recent Broadway notables include Norm Lewis, Beth Leavel, John Tartaglia, Emily Skinner, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, Denis Jones, Rob McClure, Julia Murney, Hugh Panero, Jennifer Holliday, and many more.
