Every autumn, Leiden hosts one of its most important traditions: Leiden Ontzet. On Oct. 3, the city marks its liberation from a Spanish siege in 1574 with food, music and community spirit that bring the whole city together.

A Historic Celebration

The streets fill with parades, performances and markets with local goods. The story of the city’s survival is remembered through ceremonies and long-standing traditions.

Food, Fun and Festivities

No Ontzet is complete without hutspot, a warm potato-and-carrot stew, or herring with white bread, both offered at stalls across the city. Alongside the food, you’ll find rides, music stages and small performances tucked into different neighborhoods. In the weeks before Oct. 3, the Leiden Carnival adds even more energy with floats and street entertainment that set the tone for the celebration.

Student Life in Leiden

For Webster Leiden students, Leiden Ontzet is a chance to experience the city in a new way. Exploring the markets, tasting local dishes and joining in the festivities make Leiden feel more familiar and connected. It’s also a moment to meet people outside of campus life and experience the culture you study in class, but in real time.

Join the Celebration

Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in Ontzet and experience local traditions, connect with the community and feel the city at its liveliest.
